Walkable Communities

From the Parks Department
Hi Neighbors,
With the break in weather, the Parks department has already started working on Frost Woods Park!  As you may have noticed, fencing was installed down the 3rd base side of the diamond.  The taller poles will accommodate a 6’ netting that will go up before the baseball season and should help with safety for foul balls.  The playground equipment won't go in until the week of April 23rd but the old equipment may be gone as early as this week.  The Parks Department is asking us to please stay out of the construction zone as much as possible as it will be very muddy during the process.
After the playground equipment goes in, cement work and site restoration will still need to happen so please be kind to Public Works and keep clear of the work zone so it can be finished as quickly as possible. The goal is to have everything finished by mid-May - all depends on the weather!

School is in session, kids are walking (or biking)!
Please obey the posted speed limits and slow down for children!

Frost Woods Homes Association Description

Frost Woods Homes Association began as in informal meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton Beatty in the early fall of 1935.  The first annual meeting  of the Association was held on April 13, 1936 at the home of Ray S. Owen, also known as Bungalowen.

The Association was developed in order to preserve the natural beauty of the area and to "promote a harmony of architectural expression which will give distinction to the whole and which will give to each home builder protection against similarity or duplication in exterior design of other houses erected in the neighborhood." (Beatty)  Most of the homes are built on double and some even triple lots.  This has resulted in a spacious feeling throughout this wooded area.

The Association works with the City of Monona to preserve and improve the area's three fine recreational facilities: Frost Woods Park, Frost Woods Beach (once Owen Beach in name of Ray S. Owen), and Frost Island, owned and maintained by the Association as a wilderness area and wildlife refuge.  The park consists of a playground, basketball courts, and a baseball field.

The Association sponsors a number of social activities.  In the past, activities included a Fourth of July celebration, with a kiddie parade and ball game; a late afternoon picnic on the Marshall Owen estate with games; and an evening fireworks display (which is now put on by the City of Monona).  Today's activities include an Annual Clambake held the Sunday after Labor Day at Frostwoods Beach and a Winter Social with Hot Cocoa and S'mores held on Frost Island.

Frost Woods Homes Association will celebrate its 75th Anniversary in 2011.  A celebration and homes tour are being planned for September 10, 2011.
